Stargazing in Okemo Valley

Stars in Chester by Riley Karl
Whether you’re a beginner or an expert, you’ll be deeply impressed by a clear night’s sky in Okemo Valley, Vermont. With 80% of the country not able to experience the magic of the night’s sky, seeing the stars and their magnificence has become an increasingly unique experience. Due to light pollution, it is rare in many places throughout the United States to truly witness the constellations above.  Surrounded by forest, our region provides a change of pace from the glow of city lights, making it an ideal location for stargazing. According to local astronomer Claudio Velez, South Central Vermont is one of the best places to view the stars within a 4-5 hour drive of both Boston and New York City.

Your Okemo star-gazing itinerary!

Bring a blanket to lie on, pack some snacks, be prepared to stay up late, & avoid cloudy nights.
All of these are drivable spots that don’t involve trekking through the wilderness in the dead of night.
💫 Visit the Calvin Coolidge State Park Pavilion; there is a wide-open field with plenty of sky. 🤩 Mount Holly Overlook on Okemo Mountain Road at the top of Okemo; there is a cut-out that faces away from any big towns. It faces northeast. ⭐ 20 Mile Stream Road is a back road that connects Ludlow to Cavendish, and East Hill Road is a back road that connects Ludlow to Andover. These roads are lined with fields, so you can drive until you find a spot with a good view above you. They are both away from most major light pollution sources. ✨ Site 1 Road is a great spot where there is so much sky to see in many directions. 🌟 If you’re feeling adventurous, go for a night-time paddle at Lowell Lake or view the wide open sky from the shore on the wide walking path.
